Founding Members: Open Doors Organization
Open Doors Organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Chicago, was founded in 2000 with the mission of improving accessibility for people with disabilities as consumers. We work primarily in travel and tourism, helping businesses to succeed in the disability market while simultaneously empowering the disability community.
Accessibility professionals, whether in the public or private sector, are absolutely key to ensuring full inclusion for people with disabilities. Given the large and growing size of our community, this means that these professionals play a critical role in the financial and operational success of the institutions they serve. At Open Doors Organization (ODO), we have long been concerned that the services of accessibility professionals are undervalued. As a result, there is little incentive to invest in their training and give them appropriate managerial status, staffing and remuneration. Having an international association to set training standards and certify members as well as raise awareness of the importance of their work will undoubtedly help to elevate the status of the profession. For that reason, we at ODO are proud to join IAAP as a founding member.
What will make our profession strong is having you as a member. Regardless of your knowledge level in accessibility, we all play a role in growing this profession. Help guide us to being a great professional association serving our diverse needs.
Through use of IAAP Connections, you can join an existing discussion or even start your own. You can also blog, upload resources to libraries and join some of our committees.
